Embrapa cultivars are resistant to the world’s most serious banana disease

Research in Colombia confirmed BRS Princesa and BRS Platina’s resistance to Tropical Race 4 (TR4). The disease affects Asia, Africa, and Oceania; has already hit Colombia, Peru and Venezuela and threatens global food security.

The cultivars are fundamental for the protection of Brazilian banana production.

An international partnership with AgroSavia allowed field tests in contaminated areas in Colombia. Growers see the varieties as relief in light of the risk of billion-dollar losses.
